TO MOUNT THE CABLE LUBRICATOR on the deflector side of the machine, a U-shaped bracket can be mounted on the bed plate to support the lubricator. If the job does not have space on the deflector side, or if the ropes have horizontal motion on 2:1 roping due to sheaves being mounted at right angles to each other, the unit should be mounted on the centerline of the drive sheave where there is no horizontal motion of the ropes as shown in sketch #2. It may be mounted on top of the rope guard.
IMPORTANT: For this device to function properly there must be a solid ground connection from the device to the machine. After the lubricator is installed, test to make sure it is grounded.
THE WICK: A sufficient portion of the wick must protrude beyond the pressure plate so that the unit may be advanced toward the ropes until grooves half the diameter of the ropes have been worn in the felt wick. Do not advance the wick beyond this point; direct contact between wick and ropes is not required as movement of the ropes passing the wick generates an electrostatic attraction of the ion conducting lubricant across the gap, depositing it onto the ropes. Once the grooves are formed, adjust the unit so the wick has no more than approximately 1/16th inch clearance from the cable. Adjust the wick pressure plate to control the flow.
FILL THE CABLE LUBRICATOR to the level just below the hinge pivot inside the cover to avoid lubricant leaking out of the unit. Return the cover to the closed position to protect the lubricant from contamination and remove any excess lubricant from the outside of the cover.
INITIAL BREAK-IN: When the unit is newly installed against "dry" cables, more lubricant is used until an adequate amount of film is deposited on the cables, after which lubricant usage will be relatively light. The wick on a new unit should be replaced after inital break-in as rouge, from dry ropes, will build up on the the wick and inhibit the effectiveness of the cable lubricator. Replacement wicks are available.
RECOMMENDED CABLE LUBRICANTS: The Nylube cable lubricator is designed to work with Lubri-Cable or Cable Care 65 (for higher traction co-efficient under heavy loads). Other lubricants may not have the correct properties to be absorbed and lifted by the wick.
