Suggestions for seizing the dead end of the wire rope after it has been inserted through the wedge socket casting.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The ends of both preformed and non-preformed wire ropes must have the ends seized with seizing wire. Because of the increase in diameter caused by the wire seizings, the wire rope must be tthreaded through the casting, looped and run out again before the wire seizings are applied. To keep the rope from unraveling while this is being done, temporary seizings of stranded fiberglass or nylon reinforced tape ( otherwise known as packaging tape ) must be applied first.
The tape seizings must be applied before the wire rope is run through the wegde socket casting. If wire seizings are already on the rope end, check to see if the rope will fit through the casting. If the rope will not fit through the casting with the wire seizings on, first apply the temporary tape seizings, and then remove the wire seizings. The wire seizings will have to be replaced after the wire rope is looped through the wedge socket casting.
For preformed 1/2" and 5/8" diameter wire ropes, a single seizing sufficient. For non-preformed wire ropes, two seizings are required, approximately 6 rope diameters apart. It is not necessary to remove the tape seizings once the wire seizings have been put on. Each seizing should be the equivalent of one rope diameter.
CAUTION
Welding the wire rope ends to replace the requirement for wire seizings is not recommended. Once the wire rope is placed under tension, it will stretch and the wires and strands will need to adjust. A welded end will cause the rope to adjust on the load bearing side rather than on the dead end.
