DISCUSSION
The purpose of the rope retainer clip assembly is to hold the dead end of the wire rope in place. The retainer clip assembly bears no load.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Torque the rope retainer clip assembly down to no more than 8 foot pounds. This will be adequate to hold the wedge and the rope in place. Caution: At 8 foot pounds the retainer clip assembly will begin to deform. Forces over 10 foot pounds will cause the bolt to shear off.
After a load is placed on the wedge clamp, it may be necessary to loosen and readjust the retainer clip assembly. Movement of the strands in a wire rope as it adjusts under tension may cause some movement in the alignment of the rope retainer clips.
ROPE ROTATION INDICATION
Once installed, wire ropes stretch. Stretching will cause some degree of twist movement counter to the direction of the lay, over the length of the rope. Normally this torque is minimal and will not cause turning of the rope socketing device. Rotation can cause an imbalance of rope tensions. A simple method of rotation detection is to loop a single wire through the slots in the bottom of each wedge clamp. If rotation occurs, this wire will break. If this happens, tension adjustment of the rope(s) should be undertaken. The wire loop can then be reinstated.
